好萊塢的專欄作家 Sidney Skolsky 在文章中第一次公開使用了 "奧斯卡" 這個名稱，而開始流傳。
(原因據說是小金人長得很像某工作人員的叔淑 Oscar)
而且，因正式名稱 "學院獎"，太過嚴肅、無趣，
所以不論業外或業內，大家都漸漸改稱... "奧斯卡金像獎 (或奧斯卡獎)"。
2013 年起，這已成為美國影藝學院註冊的正式名稱。
